Arumã is a native plant in northern Brazil, primarily found in semi-flooded areas. Its use in basketry is an ancient practice, and its management is done with care and responsibility to ensure sustainable harvesting. Arumã is used in its natural color and can also be dyed with natural pigments extracted from plants such as annatto and crajiru, resulting in shades of red and yellow. Black tones are achieved through soot, charcoal, and ash from ceramic kilns. The fixing varnish is extracted from trees like Ingá, among others.
